The Twelfth Cylon Revealed

The political world is phase shifting, from yellow to at least orange. Just in the past couple of days we have had Scotty McClellan tearing apart the walls of Bush World by revealing truths that we have long known. Bush and Co. have struck back by trying to toss him into the sphere of hell that they reserve for those who are disloyal to the brotherhood. (First rule of Bush World: never speak ill of the inner circle or the gods will strike you down, down, and further down.)

But I am not here to talk about politics.  (We have all been just so immersed in political discussion.) I want to provide a respite. I want to answer a question that I know has been on many of your minds. I know that it has been on mine. Who is the twelfth Cylon?

A couple of months ago, a colleague recommended that I watch Battlestar Galactica. As a born sucker for entertaining Sci fi, whether on the screen or in print, I gave it a whirl. I especially like Sci fi that breaks some of the conventions of the genre. As any BSG fan knows, we are currently in season four. However, because I came late to BSG, I was able to watch the first three seasons on DVD. But now I find myself having to deal with commercial TV, for the fourth season has just begun, and there are no DVD's. For the solution to one of the biggest mysteries, who is the twelfth Cylon, I must wait months to find out. (For those of you who may not have seen the show, the Cylons are an "artificial" species that human beings created. And they in turn have created Cylons who look and act like human beings, which has led to many trials for both "species." We have learned who eleven of the human-like Cylons are, but the twelfth is a serious mystery.)

I find this intolerable. I need to know now, not in several months. So employing the finely honed analytical skills that I have developed as professional philosopher, I decided to figure out the answer.

It wasn't very hard. First, we must keep in mind that we are dealing with a show that prides itself on unexpected twists and turns. It wants to play outside of the box. Second, we must assume that the character who will turn out to be the twelfth Cylon, while already known to the audience, will still surprise us.

The writers have placed clues. The most striking: the executive officer, Saul Tigh, is a colonel. Why is this striking? Because we are on board a starship, a battlestar, in which everyone on board has naval military ranks. (Standard Sci fi fare here.) The Battlestar Galactica is led by an admiral, Lee Adama. It turns out, however, that the second in command-a hard-drinking, uptight, cussing, tough military type-is a colonel. And he is also a Cylon. The trail leads through Tigh, no doubt about it.

BSG has been rife with political commentary. (Sorry, we got back to politics somehow.) And the last shows have only been written recently due to the writers' strike. We know that one of the techniques that has become commonplace in TV of late is to import political figures into shows. The twelfth Cylon will be such a figure and, get this, he is going to be Tigh's fraternal twin. (Yes, this will turn out to be one of the most interesting twists in the plot. Up until now, all human-like Cylons have been identical twins. Now fraternal twins will come to the fore....a genetic variation that suggests new possibilities for the species.) You laugh, you scoff. But I tell you that he will be a military person, who, like Tigh, has had trouble with authority. Still skeptical. You will see and believe.....

Behold, I give you Colonel Tigh, a Cylon, and his fraternal twin, the Twelfth Cylon:

Okay, sorry, I don't know how to put pictures up on MyDD, so you are getting a commercial break.  If you want to tune in further,

You ruined it! (none / 0)

It's perfect.  It was revealed on Monday night that Colonel--who offed his wife last season--got 6 (a young, attractive female Cylon) pregnant!  Just as Cranky McSame dumped his first wife and shacked up with a trophy wife.

Nah... (none / 0)

it's one of the three. Of course that could change at anytime and any and all of these could die off. It is Battlestar Galactica afterall.

Maybe... (none / 0)

The Hybrid's clue throws me off though. Unless he's going to suffer greatly in the next few episodes and looks for redemption. I think RDM is sick enough though to make it be Dualla, wherein both Starbuck & Apollo ends up married to cylons. I noticed that the last 4 cylons are placed right next to people in positions of power.

The truth is they could make it Doc Cottle and find a way to explain it.

Silly, Silly, Silly (none / 0)

We already know who the 12th cylon is; its Lee Adama.
Or rather a clone that was made of him. In fact the Lee clone was the first human form cylon, as alluded to in "The Razor".
Also, Tigh has already been revealed as a cylon.

Ditto that.. (none / 0)

I might have to go back and watch that again, because I didn't see that at all.

That which has happen before (none / 0)

will happen again.
You got to see the whole thing metaphorically.
Look very closely at the scene where the young "Husker" is in the cylon laboratory.
Why did the cylons quit immediately after that?
However, I could be wrong, and it might be Admiral Helena Cain, but I am usually pretty good at these mysteries.

Re: That which has happen before (none / 0)

I did see that, but didn't really pick up on it at the time.

After the episode before last, I'm convinced that it's one of the humans on the renegade basestar, considering how it immediately jumped when the hybrid was plugged back in. Baltar would be as easy as picking Starbuck, so, Roslin maybe? Helo?

Humm? (none / 0)

Helo?
Definitely not. Helo as a cylon would defeat the meaning of everything that happened in season 1 and 2.
Roslyn?
She had cancer, but cylon blood cured her.
Star Buck?
Intriguing, and it would explain the prophesy.
Baltar?
Like wise, that would defeat the purpose of season 1 and 2.
I am convinced that the 12th is the original, and its origin has something to do with the end of the first cylon-human war.
But I may be wrong.

Re: The Twelfth Cylon Revealed (none / 0)

Here's the way I've been thinking about it. If it's going to be meaningful, it's got to be one of the principals -- i.e., Adama, Roslin, Starbuck, Apollo, or Baltar. If it's going to be surprising, it's got to be Adama, Roslin, or Apollo; Starbuck and Baltar are more obvious. Further, I think there are two possible routes they can take with the final cylon: either it's just like the other four, or it's different in some way -- perhaps it's conscious of what it is (Cylon God?) and has been orchestrating events from the beginning. If it's just like the other four, I think they'd go for maxim shock-value and make it Adama, Roslin, or Apollo. If, however, it is different, then I think it could be any one of them (with the exception of Starbuck -- I really don't think it's Starbuck).

Re: The Twelfth Cylon Revealed (none / 0)

I admit that I've missed several episodes, but just how does Starbuck come back from the dead?  She's obviously a cylon.  The fact that they even give her the benefit of the doubt is a plot hole for me.

There's a strong undercurrent of mysticism running throughout the series. I don't know how it's possible that Starbuck survived death, but I'm convinced that she isn't a cylon -- it's just too obvious at this point. Of course, she is the harbinger of death and responsible for the end of the human race, so anything's possible.

Uh, no.  She's leading the Cylons to their doom, not humans.

Re: "Of course (none / 0)

The precise quote (from "Razor") is:

"Kara Thrace will lead the human race to its end. She is the herald of the apocalypse, the harbinger of death. They must not follow her."

What this means is anyone's guess, although I doubt it means "doom." I would guess that Starbuck will pave the way for the race of hybrids -- thus "ending" the human race (and cylon race, too).

Re: The Twelfth Cylon Revealed (none / 0)

Everyone knows that the twelfth cylon is none other than Barack Obama.

1. No surviving members of his immediate bilogocal family.  Except that half sister, who doesn't even look like him--he looks black and she looks asian--and he keeps her squirreled away on some island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

2. He's uncannily persuasive, attractive, and well dressed.

3. He is a monotheist.

4. He just appeared out of nowhere a few years ago.

5. He never looks tired or hungry.

6. If asked, I am sure he would profess to hate cylons while advocating diplomatic connections with them without pre-conditions.

I could go on and on...

Obama is a cylon.  If only the Clinton campaign had figured that out sooner.

LOL! I was wondering when someone would say it.

Here's another question:  Are the Cyclons really God's chosen people?

As a Jew, I would have to recuse myself from the debate for reasons of potential bias.  But given that the female models are all very attractive and the male models are average joes at best, I'd say only if the God who chose them was an insecure 23 year old.

Re: The Twelfth Cylon Revealed (none / 0)

I read an article today that said that the identity of the last cylon would blow our minds.  I can't wait!

Wouldn't it be funny if it turned out to be John McCain?

I am pretty sure the cylons are WalMart, in league with all of the major corporations that are taking over the world.
